When it comes to choosing the right bank there are a lot of things that need to be taken into consideration, especially if you don’t want to overpay or get charged for services that you don’t need.  The strategies below will help you to find the best bank for your needs at the lowest cost that you can pay.  Enjoy.

First you should know what your options are, know what you need from your bank and know what your options are.  Generally speaking larger banks have more ATM machines and are more convenient but charge higher fees for that convenience. Smaller banks have less ATM’s and regular locations but have lower fees as well. Online-only banks offer higher interest rates but don’t have the services that a bank with a brick and mortar location can offer and finally credit unions have lower fees as well but some restrictions that may be inconvenient. Knowing what you need beforehand is vital to picking what bank is best for you.

Speaking of credit unions the simple fact is that they are invested into the communities that they serve and are probably safer than a national bank makes them less of a risk. On the other hand if you travel often and far you may need a bank that has branches throughout the United States or at least a portion of it do that you can access your money and services when you’re on the go.

Once you find a bank get to know the people there and make a connection with, at the very least, the ones that work at your local branch, including the branch manager.  That way if you ever do have a problem you can communicate with them as acquaintances instead of as strangers.  Plus, working with just one bank is better than several so that you can stay on top of your financial situation more readily.

The fact is, banks are as unique as the people that use them.  If you know what you need, ask educated questions (and get the answers you’re looking for) you should be able to find a bank that not only takes care of your banking and other financial needs but also will take care of you, helping you if you make a mistake and lending you the money you need to live your life the way you desire. They won’t charge you an arm and a leg for it either and will have the kind of conveniences that you’re looking for.  If your bank doesn’t sound like that it may be time to find a new one.

I hedged my bet and have both a credit union and large commercial bank for over 40 years. I like my credit union for the personalized service and the bank for convenience. I was able to access cash in foreign countries (via ATM) and they treat me very well. I receive a lot of free services and other benefits.
