It seems that there isn’t any shortage of this topic online. But there is a reason for this, people always want to know a quick way to make a buck. It’s always about money, money, money. After all, you are reading a personal finance blog for advice on saving, spending, making, banking, or investing money, aren’t you? I actually own another personal finance site that seems to get most of it’s traffic from people who want new ideas on how to make money. Not all of these ideas are for the average person, if they were, they wouldn’t be weird and unusual, would they?
Check the Return Policy on that Item!
Some people are out of work, or had unfortunate luck in the markets, and they need cash to pay their bills. Then there are others who simply spent too much money, perphaps money they didn’t have to begin with. The quickest and easiest way to turn a buck is to return those recently (or semi-recently) purchases items. Some store still have very relaxed return policies, and will take back just about anything they can sell. In fact, I recently took back an unused, albeit not new, xbox headset to GameStop. They took it back and issued me store credit for an amount greater than it was purchased for. I understand that store credit may not be the answer you are looking for, but it can be used on birthday or Christmas present later on, or an item that you may purchase in the future. If you are absolutely desperate for cash, you can use the store credit to purchase something in demand on Ebay or Craigslist and then resell it there. It may be at a discount, but it’s cash in hand you didn’t have before.
Start Hunting Down Those Cans
If you live in a state with bottle return legislation (like I do in Michigan), then you can take back all of those used up pop cans and beer bottles to your local store. In Michigan, the consumer is charged for the amount of the deposit at the point of sale, and when they are brought back for recycling the money is returned to you. Why all state haven’t enacted similar policies I’ll never know. You help the environment, and if you can get your hands on cans that weren’t yours to begin with, you can turn some quick cash off of it. I often see people scavenge through trash cans looking for empty cans and bottles they can recycle.
All in the Name of Science
Remember, I did say this list wasn’t necessarily for the average person. Becoming a medical guinea pig is actually quite easy, just surf that web with any such criteria and you will find numerous listings. That being said, most studies are very specific in criteria and some will require that you aren’t participating in more than study at a time. However, you can often make a quick $50 – $100 for something simple (and non-life threatening) like filling out a series of questionnaires. On the other hand, you can make even more if you are willing to subject your body to an experimental drug program!
Cash Out the Life Insurance Policy
Granted most people may not have a whole life insurance policy, I know I don’t. I think they are a poor investment, and the smart way to go is a term policy. However, they do have cash value, and if you are cash strapped, they can be a relatively quick way to rake in some dough. Remember, if this is your sole life insurance policy then it may be a very poor decision, since it leaves your family vulnerable in case of an emergency. Not to mention the financial performance of this investment could be up or down from the time you initiated the policy. Still, it is a source of cash that could come in handy if you are deperate enough.
Sell Your Hair
Male pattern baldness is a very common thing these days, so many of you might be ‘sighing’ on thos one. But for those that aren’t follicly challenged you can make some serious cash selling your locks. What’s even more amazing is that you can buy and sell hair online. I suppose if it works for electronics, why not hair as well. Though not a common, you can make up to $2,000 selling your hair. The best part is that it grows back (most of the time), so you can sell it all over again! Just Google “how to sell my hair” and you will find plenty of interestingly named sites out there wanting to purchase your hair.
