Winter may be letting up a bit in the south but in northern locales people are still stuck with snow, sleet, ice and the rest of winter’s nastiness. That means they’ll want badly to get away and, if that’s you, we have a few great tips that will save you money so that your trip to the sunshine won’t leave your wallet burned. Enjoy.
Timing is everything when it comes to vacations. If you go when everyone else goes you’re going to pay the most and also put up with the most, as in the most people on the slopes, the most people on the beach, etc. However, if you can hold off until spring break has completely passed and before summer break starts you’ll find great deals and fewer people wherever you go. Of course if the plan is for you and your frat brothers to go to Ft. Lauderdale and tear it up you may want to go during the height of spring break but don’t say we didn’t warn you that you’ll pay through the nose.
If you’re going to be away for more than a week you may consider renting a home, especially if you’re going with a large enough group of people to share the cost. Going during the ‘shoulder season’ will get you even better rates because they’ll be priced for the local market, not the tourist market. Indeed you may be able to rent a home for 40% to 60% less than a hotel would cost and you’ll get all the amenities of home. (Just make sure everyone cleans up after themselves because housekeeping won’t be around to do it.)
If you really want to save big take as little as possible. The airlines are all starting to charge for baggage and some of them are really charging a heck of a lot! They would have to be, seeing as they made almost $3 BILLION dollars last year in baggage fees alone. So pack as little as you can. The less baggage the better. Ladies we know this is difficult but wouldn’t it be better to have the extra money for martinis than to give it to the airlines? We thought so.
If possible you should call the hotel you wish to stay at directly. The reason is that they don’t always put the best prices online and, in some instances, they have sudden openings that need to be filled due to cancellations or other problems. If this happens they will never put the info online but, if you call and ask to speak to a manager, you may get a great deal if you’re polite and persistent.
Like hotels, calling the airline directly could save you money as well. Online is convenient to say the least but talking to a live person who can look at their schedule and see what’s actually available could be worth the aggravation, especially if it saves you a few hundred bucks. Also, ask them to tell you about any ‘positioning’ flights that they might have. These are flights that move planes into position from airport to airport (when necessary) and sometimes you can get on one for dirt cheap if you don’t mind accommodating the schedule.
While these tips provide a bit of insight on how to save money while traveling, they do little to provide advice on how to obtain the money to begin traveling in the first place! I would venture to guess that if people had more money they would most likely travel more often, and to more exotic locations. You always have the option of finding a pay day loan company to get fast cash to take the vacation of your choice. Companies like quickpaydayloans.co.uk have a typical APR of 1737% so make sure it’s a trip worth taking!
Now go take that vaca, have a great time and make sure to send us a postcard. Aloha!
